Improv Games for Team Building

1. Mindmeld

Method

  • Work with a partner (or, alternatively, with a group in a circle)
  • Two people step forward and each think of a word.
  • They count down together “3, 2, 1” then announce their words at the same time.
  • A: Bench – B: Tree
  • Both people take a few seconds to think of a word that will make sense of both these words, or join them together in some way.
  • When both people are ready, count down together “3, 2, 1” and announce your new word at the same time.
  • A: Wood – B: Park
  • Continue until you manage to say the same word at the same time!
  • A: Woodchips – B: Playground
  • A: Slide B: Slide
  • Then celebrate!

Advanced Tips

  • Don’t panic if you can’t land on the same word or if it takes a long time.
  • Really it’s about listening carefully and starting to adapt to someone else’s way of thinking.
  • The process itself is the achievement.

2. Clapping Together

Method

  • Participants stand in a circle
  • The facilitator can start by looking at the person to their left or right, waiting until eye contact is established and then clapping.
  • Both people should aim to clap at the same time.
  • The next person then turns to the next around the circle, gains eye contact and they clap together.
  • Fairly soon a rhythm should be established.
  • The clap can be passed back the other way by maintaining eye contact and clapping with the same person again.
  • The clap can be passed across the circle.
  • The rhythm should attempt to be maintained and both people involved in each clap should try to clap at the same time.

Advanced Tips

  • Try to stay relaxed
  • Try speeding up to the point where it will fail.  Celebrate this.
  • Invent new rules as you go.

3. Start, Stop, Huh!

Method

  • Ask everyone to walk around the room at an energised pace, as if they had the exact amount of time before they had to arrive somewhere, so no need to rush but no time to dawdle.
  • Instruct the group that they are all going to come to a dead stop at exactly the same time.
  • Ask them to repeat this process several times so that they are all stopping and walking magically together.
  • They may try and cheat – don’t let them!
  • For fun you can put in a jump, or a shout too, “Huh” or their own move.
  • Another variation is to always just have one person moving but they must wordlessly negotiate this, you can increase to 2 or 3 people, or everyone moving and only 1 person still.

  • Challenge people to break their own patterns
  • Encourage people to keep their gaze up and out
