Online Improv Elective: Their English is good enough! with Marie de Waal

About this event

You have always only improvised in your first language? Or maybe you sometimes improvise in a second language too, but never had the chance and space to reflect on the experience? If you teach improv, you probably have already taught people of various language backgrounds (bilingual, trilingual etc.) or to ESLs, English as a Second Language speakers. As a good and thoughtful teacher, you have asked yourself how to better cater to them and their multilingual brains.

Having a second-language speaker in an improv class is a huge advantage and should be seen as such. This elective class is all about being aware of second-language speakers in the classroom and how the convention of a shared language and cultural background may be overcome to offer not only ESL participants, but all participants, a more inclusive session.

The ESL experience is not monolithic: it can vary from person to person, from situation to situation. However, there are some aspects of improv training and performance which, when taken into consideration, could help you develop a more inclusive practice.

Including and enabling English as a Second Language participant in a class and teaching native English speakers to work harmoniously with them will train better players, more supportive improvisers and a more solid community.

This class is aimed at improv teachers and experienced improvisers who want to be more inclusive.

What to expect:

  • Exercises and games to appreciate that having second-language speakers in your classroom is a gift.
  • Guidance on how to be a supportive improviser/teacher.
  • Tips & tricks on how to play inclusively with ESL improvisers.

Min. participants 6, max. participants 14. If we have to cancel the event due to low numbers, we will do this with 24hours notice (and you will receive a warning 48 hours before the course if this looks likely).

Marie de Waal is a native German speaker and has been improvising since 2014, when she started in Sweden with a group consisting of all second-language English speakers. Based in London, she has trained as an improv teacher with The Improv Place, Laura Doorneweerd-Perry and Rise Comedy, among others. Marie is the resident coach of ISL – Improv as a Second Language and facilitates improv workshops for second-language speakers on a regular basis. Marie is also an experienced performer and the director of Spicebox!, which started as a Nursery Online Original.

This Advanced elective runs Wednesday 23th June, 7.00-9.30 pm BST.
