Viola Spolin Theater Games: Playing with the Origins of Improvisational Theater
About this Event
This fun, active workshop will provide you with the most important games, ideas and techniques at the core of all improvisation. You will learn new games, experience a spacewalk and hear inspirational stories about the beginning of Improv. Mostly you will just play! Spolin games enhance all aspects of performance and can apply to your personal life. This is the work that has launched the careers of many of our most famous actors and improvisers, like Alan Arkin and Alan Alda, and has been used by directors like Mike Nichols and Rob Reiner. This is a rare opportunity to experience Spolin workshops, not easily found on Eventbrite. Advanced players will also benefit from this workshop.
In this workshop you can expect to:
- Play Theater Games
- Space Walk
- 7 Aspects of Spontaneity
- Stories of Improv Past
- New Warmup Games

We work hard to provide a welcoming environment for all improvisers. In order to give space to different experiences and identities, the Nursery and the Maydays have worked to provide opportunities for specific groups to meet, connect, and improvise with one another. Each workshop will cover different topics depending on the instructor. Sometimes sessions will be aimed at particular skills, issues and questions, and other times they will simply be a place for people to come together and play.
The Nursery and the Maydays are constantly working to create programming based on the needs of our current students and the global improv community. If there is an underrepresented group that you would like to see have a workshop, send an email.
Min. participants 6, max. 12.
