The Maydays 15th Annual Improv Retreat – Meet your Teacher – Liz Peters

Headshot of The Maydays Liz Peters for blog post 15th Annual Improv Retreat Meet your Teachers

Our October Improv Retreat is going to be here before you know it and with the retreat almost Sold Out, we’d like to introduce you to your improv teachers who you’ll be playing with this year. Next up, the one and only, Liz Peters!

Hey Liz, what’s the feeling like in the Maydays camp the night before the retreat kicks off?

There’s a bubbling of excitement. There are always last minute details to fine tune so there are many thoughts to keep on top of, as well as the feeling of a horse ready to break out of the gate for the epic run to begin!

Is there a particular part of the retreat that you’re most looking forward to?

I always enjoy doing our evening shows, it’s rare to have so many Maydays in the same place so I relish that. I also look forward to the opportunity to play with interesting techniques and delve deep in classes, in a way that is only possible when improv nerds have the chance to live and breathe improv for several days without ‘real world’ distractions. We can go much deeper as the retreat is a place where people are already warmed up and connected.
For someone who has never been before & is tempted to join us in October, but is feeling a little nervous to push that Book Now button, what advice would you give?
It’s understandable to be uncertain about making a commitment. There are of course many questions, will I enjoy it, will I get on with people, will it be worth it.. ? I can wholeheartedly confirm that our retreats are full of incredible and supportive humans as well as opportunities to step out of your perceived limitations and try something new. The retreat is one of my favourite experiences in the year, it will certainly be a rollercoaster of a ride and you’ll be supported throughout in a bubble of creativity and trust.
We offer the Jason Chin Scholarship each year, why’s it important?
Improv is for everyone and we are committed to making that possible. If the retreat appeals and feels out of reach, take this opportunity. You’ll get to come for free and enjoy the ride without any judgment or highlighting of the reason. We’re all in it together.
For those returning to the retreat for another 3-days of joy, what can they expect from our 15th residential?

We’ve taken on feedback from previous retreats to offer some slightly longer classes and a little more space for rest and connection. So we’re expecting all the same joyful creativity and experimentation of previous years, whilst remaining physically and emotionally vibrant enough to get the best out of the experience.

What’s one of the funniest moments from previous years for you?

Two monsters (each one created by multiple improvisers) flirting. Magnificent collaboration!

What’s one of the most magical moments from previous years?

An impromptu late night session in the bar led to people trying all kinds of amateur acrobatic endeavours with the support and encouragement of each other! I was able to do my first ever handstand and felt completely safe and supported. I’d never managed this before and was elated. #lifegoalunlocked #youraisemeup

Sum up The Maydays Improv Retreat in a little one-liner

A glorious dive into many weird and wonderful areas of improv with a lovely bunch of people.
